Setting

As we are reading our fiction texts, we are focusing on setting, characters, and plot. We know that setting is defined as where and when a story takes place. Consider the following:

  • What is the setting of your story right now?
  • How does the setting influence the plot?
  • Create one post (1) and respond to three (3) classmates.

    4. HI KEN. Julio felt alone and began to admire Enrique because Enrique, despite being alone and not being a handsome boy, he loved himself

    5. HI Dayana. Saying that Julio was a Enrique's follower mean Julio wants to be like Enrique act like him in every situation. I think this answer your both questions.

    6. HI Mayra, what makes to Enrique a rebel student is what he doesn't care about anything or anybody, in the middle of the class if he feels bored he will just stand up and walk out.

  5. The setting of the book "Bodega Dreams" by Ernesto Quiñonez is in East Harlem. The setting influences the plot because in the story, a character in the book named Willie Bodega is a drug dealer who is very important to the community of East Harlem. He helps the community out with things that they need, such as: living, expenses, & more as long as they support Willie with whatever he needs.

    1. Sounds very interesting. what happen if they don't support Willie we what he needs?

      Delete
    2. I'm just guessing that if they don't support Willie, he will not support or help them and he wouldn't be able to help out the community in such a positive way, even though drugs are the reason he can fund the community.

    3. In your opinion, is Bodega a "good guy," or a "bad guy?" Why? How did the setting help shape Bodega's dreams and personality?

  7. The book I'm reading is "Bodega Dreams", right now the story takes place in Spanish Harlem where the two main characters are Julio (chino) And Enrique(sapo). Enrique was tough; always getting into fight and was very respected. On the other hand, Julio was a follower he wanted to be like Enrique. In this book, Julio is telling the story. He tells us that Spanish Harlem was a dangerous place. The Junior High School 99 where they went was divided in two powers, the white teachers that didn't care and went to work just to get paid, and the Spanish teachers. They were like there mothers that yelled and told them what to do.

  13. In A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry paints an impressive group portrait of the Youngers, a family composed of powerful individuals who are yet in many ways typical in their dreams and frustrations. There is Lena, or Mama, the widowed mother; her daughter Beneatha, a medical student; Beneatha’s brother Walter, a struggling chauffeur; and Walter’s wife, Ruth, and their young son. Crammed together in an airless apartment, the family dreams of better days. Walter longs unrealistically for riches and resents being under his mother’s thumb, while the intelligent and idealistic Beneatha searches for her own identity and that of her race. The family situation is brought to a crisis when Lena receives the first real money they have ever had: $10,000, the insurance payment on her husband’s life. The family finally has the means to buy a house of their own, but the dream proves difficult to achieve, as first Walter’s rage over a lifetime of thwarted dreams, then the hostility of their new white neighbors, would seem to threaten the family’s security and even their self-respect.

    2. In that time I think not all the people had the opportunity to have a good job and not everyone had money , I have to keep reading To figure out what others influences were happening in Chicago .

  17. I am reading A Raisin in the sun.
The setting of the story I am reading right now take place in Chicago's South Side during Worl Warll.
It is about family (Character Ruth Younger:wife, Walter Younger: husband, Travis Younger:son, Beneatha Younger: Walter' sister..)living in a small apartment in a building, sharing the bathroom that is in the hall of the same floor of the bulding.

This plot of the story resembles at any time in the life of a person or family that migrates to another country. The peple that we have migrated sometimes we have lived uncomforrable.

  19. Bodega Dreams took place in Spanish Harlem NYC. It talks about a boy who was discriminated against since he was born. His father didn’t like him at first because he was different from other kids. He is strong, looks like a toad, with a huge mouth framed by fat lips and bulging eyes. He often gets into fights because everyone at school or anywhere he went, he felt bullied. That’s why he has a strong character. He kept getting knocked down by whoever messes with him. He thought this is the only way he can get respect. The only person who respects him is Julio, who admires Enrique, also known as “Sapo”. Julio and “Sapo” live in a dangerous place, but inside Enrique is a good kid. He wanted to study and be successful after he graduates from school. His life changed and became honorable and professional.

  22. Hi guys ,

I'm reading the book ''Bodega Dreams'' took place in East Harlem. The main two characters of the story are Enrique (Sapo) and Julio (Chino) they grew up in the same town they are very close friends. Julio is married to the beautiful and pentecostal Blanca (Nancy), who is on his way up and out. But under the influence of his tough friend Sapo.

  23. I like that- Blanca is "up and out of the neighborhood." You formed a strong character analysis. Take a look at home of your classmates' posts and respond to them.

  24. "A Raisin in the Sun"
    Lena Younger(Mama)
The mother of Walter Lee and Benetha, grandmother of Travis and mother-in-low of Ruth.
The relationship with Ruth and her mother-in-low is comparable to the Biblica Ruth. Who tells her mother-in-low Naomi, "That she will travel with her wherever she goes and that your people shall be my people".

Lena Younger has a deep religious convitions (I would name good relationshio with God) and she always try to teach them about God.

In my opinion, God must always be the center of our life in order to have a good reation one by one or have united family.

About the heritage Lena simply wants the best deal for the money.

Ruth is a pacemaker in most of the explosive family situations. She reveals her strongest emototions when she realized that there is a possibility of changing her uncomfortable life to a better one living in another neighborhood.

    The Walter's dreams are deferred.
Even the Bible concerns about what we want and are our dreams.
Proverbios 13:12. "Hope deferred maketh the heart sicks; but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life."

As a Christian this is true because all of our dreams we must put first in the handsbof God and trust that he will do and have better plans for eaxh one of us

  25. Wow, Lourdes! What a parallel you mad about the symbolism of Ruth's name and the biblical person of Ruth. Thank you for this parallel, reading into the author's symbolism, and providing use with textual citations.
